LOGAN, Utah - Utah State assistant football coach David Reeves has been named one of 18 Division I-A nominees for the American Football Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Reeves, the Aggies assistant head coach in charge of linebackers, is in his second year at Utah State and his 13th year working as an assistant coach at the college level.

Reeves is responsible for coaching Aggie linebackers, which last year featured three players on the Big West Conference first-team in Brent Passey, Blake Eagal and Jesse Busta. This year the Aggies feature Busta, who is the team's leading tackler as well as Tony Newson and Robert Watts among others.

Reeves came to Utah State with current Aggie head coach Mick Dennehy ahead of the 2000 season. At Montana he had 10 linebackers earn first-team all-Big Sky honors, including three-time All-American Jason Crebo.

As a player at Montana from 1984-87, Reeves was a two-year starter at strong safety and earned the team's Most Inspirational award as a senior in 1987. He and his wife Sara have two sons, Matthew and Samuel.

"David has been with us for a long time and a lot of his responsibilities off the field are administrative responsibilities," Dennehy said. "He has been such a big help to me in that area it is unbelievable. You don't have to worry about anything regarding travel, on-campus housing, etc., because you know it is going to be done. He is very throrough and hard working.

"On the field he has a great rapport with this players and that goes without saying," Dennehy added.

The AFCA honors will include winners from Division I-A, I-AA, Division II, Division III and the NAIA. The finalists have been forwarded to members of the Public Relations Committee of the AFCA for their review and the winners will be announced Tuesday, Nov. 28.
