Women's Volleyball Announces the Signing of Four Athletes
February 23, 1999
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After one of its most successful seasons in a decade, the University of North Carolina volleyball team announced the signing of one of its strongest recruiting classes. The group of four signed the National Letter of Intent with the Tar Heels and will enroll at the University in August of 1999. The class includes:
Laura Greene, a 5'11" outside hitter and one of the top recruits from the state of North Carolina. Greene's high school team was three-time State Champions and she was the AA State Player of the Year in 1997 & 1998. She attends Forbush High School and also plays for the Yadkin Volleyball Club both coached by Robin Wesselman.
Malaika Underwood, an outside hitter and accomplished athlete from La Jolla High School in San Diego, Calif. Underwood played volleyball, basketball and baseball (she is the only girl in California to play on the boy*s high school baseball team) and is expected to make an immediate impact with the Tar Heels. Underwood plays for the Sunwest Volleyball Club in San Diego.
Eve Rackham, a 5'10" setter who will run the Tar Heel offense for the next four years. Rackham is one of the top players out of California where she was a setter and hiter and led El Molino High School to the state finals. Rackman also plays for Empire Volleyball Club in Sebastopol, Calif.
Holly Strauss, a 6'1" middle hitter from Dundas, Ontario Canada where she attends St. Mary's High School and competes with the Seekers Volleyball Club coached by Frank Lilliman. Strauss is one of the top Junior players to come out of Canada in 1999.
"The 1999 recruiting class is one of the most athletic and best balanced groups of student athletes ever to come to Chapel Hill," said Tar Heel head coach Joe Sagula. "All four players can potentially contribute to the program early in their careers. They are outstanding athletes who have been dominant players at their positions in high school and club. Each of them also posses the leadership work-ethic that will make the program strong in the years to come."
