LOS ANGELES Second ranked UCLA survived a scare from a patchwork collection
of its alumni Saturday night before outlasting them 3-1 at Pauley Pavilion. The
Bruin varsity won 15-12, 10-15, 16-14, 15-6 after rallying from deficits in Games 1 & 3.
The Alumni led 6-0 in Game 3 before the varsity battled back to tie the game.
The game see-sawed and the Alumni took a 14-12 lead before key kills by the
Varsity's Danny Farmer and Mark Williams knotted the game. From there, tired
legs and old age took their toll on the alumni and the varsity never looked
back.
"We gave them [the varsity] some competition before we ran out of gas,"
said former three-time All-American Paul Nihipali, who spiked 15 kills in 50
attempts.
Next match for UCLA will be Friday Jan. 23 at UC Santa Barbara with
first serve scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
