January 8, 1999

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane used a 30-5 run in the first half and a 30-8 run in the second half to cruise to a 98-51 victory over No. 23 Memphis at Fogelman Arena on Friday.

Tulane (11-3, 3-1 C-USA) held the Lady Tigers to their lowest offensive output of the year, a full 28 points below their 79.0 points-per-game average. Memphis (10-3, 2-2 C-USA) also shot just 32.8 percent from the field, though the Lady Tigers entered the contest ranked second in the league in field goal percentage (48.5 %).

Despite featuring All-American center Tamika Whitmore, defending Conference USA champion Memphis could not find an answer for Tulane's play on the blocks, as three Wave post players scored in double figures. Janell Burse came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points on an incredible 9-of-9 shooting, and grabbed seven rebounds to go along with four blocked shots. Lacey Vicknair also notched a career-high, posting 17 points on 5-of-7 shooting, while picking up six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Fabrecia Roberson hit just 2-of-4 from the field, but was 6-of-6 from the free throw line to register 10 points. She also nabbed seven rebounds.

Memphis took its biggest lead of the game, 7-4, at the 18:03 mark of the first half and led 11-10, before a Grace Daley three-pointer gave Tulane the lead for good and started a 30-5 Green Wave run. Daley, who finished with 22 points and eight rebounds, scored 10 points during the run, while Burse added eight points and three blocks during that span.

A Burse lay-up gave Tulane a 24-11 lead with 12:38 remaining in the half, and a Vicknair basket from an offensive rebound put the Wave ahead 40-16 at the 5:26 mark. During a span of 9:35, Tulane held Memphis to just two field goals and forced seven Lady Tiger turnovers. A Whitmore lay-up brought Memphis to within 19, 42-23, with 4:19 remaining in the half, but a Vicknair free throw gave Tulane a 50-25 halftime margin.

The teams traded baskets early in the second half, as Tulane led by 24, 61-37, at the 12:42 mark. A pair of Burse lay-ups and a three-pointer from Sarah Goree gave the Wave a 31-point cushion, before Memphis would cut the Tulane advantage to 25, 68-43, with 9:50 remaining in the game. From there, however, Tulane would close the game with a 30-8 run, as seven different Wave players scored during the contest's final 10 minutes.

With Tulane leading 70-44, the Wave would score the game's next 13 points to take an 83-44 advantage at the 5:04 mark. A Whitmore jumper with 3:29 remaining cut the lead to 87-51, but would prove to be the Lady Tiger's final points, as Tulane closed the contest with an 11-0 run behind seven points from Kristen Koch. The Green Wave held Memphis to just three field goals over the final 9:50 of the game in posting the 33-point win.

The Tulane reserves outscored their Memphis counterparts 37-7, while the Green Wave scored 36 points from 26 Memphis turnovers. Tulane committed just 16 turnovers, yielding only three Memphis points as a result. The Wave connected on 52.3 percent of its shots (34-of-65) and out-rebounded the Lady Tigers, 53-42.

Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave play host to Conference USA rival UAB. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
