Tulane Captures Conference USA Player, Freshman of the Year Honors

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior catcher Chad Sutter and freshman second baseman James Jurries have been named Conference USA Player and Freshman of the Year, the league office announced Tuesday. The Green Wave also placed a total of eight players on the All-Conference USA First and All-Conference USA Freshman Teams.

Sutter holds the triple crown for the Green Wave, as he leads the team in batting average (.395), RBI (77) and home runs (19). This season he broke the Tulane career records for both home runs (275) and RBI (71). Sutter leads Conference USA with 19 home runs, and he is second in batting average (.395) and slugging percentage (.720). He has a .993 fielding percentage and has committed only two errors as the Wave,s catcher.

Jurries started each of the Wave,s 56 games at second base and leads the team in doubles (16) and triples (4) and has recorded 18 home runs. This season, he has recorded a team leading 87 hits, 78 runs scored, and 165 total bases. In 236 at bats, Jurries has 87 hits and 36 strikeouts. Of the 87 hits, 38 have been multiple-base hits. Jurries broke the freshman season home run record when he hit his 17th of the season. Jurries has also been named first-team all-conference and to the C-USA all-freshman teams.

Shortstop Andy Cannizaro, left fielder Jake Burnham, right fielder Jason Sparks, right-handed pitcher Henry Bonilla, left-handed pitcher Jared Berkowitz and reliever Brandon Belanger all received first-team Conference USA honors.

The Wave had the most First Team All-Conference selections with a record eight.

Freshman third baseman Jake Gautreau was named to the C-USA all-freshman team. Gautreau is fourth in C-USA with 16 home runs.

Tulane plays its first game of the 1999 Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday at 12:30.
