Lyngstad Leads Tulane Track to Strong Finish at Nationals
Green Wave Finishes Indoor Season Ranked No. 16 Nationally
March 6, 1999 INDIANAPOLIS - Led by All-American Hanne Lyngstad, the Tulane women's track
and field team posted a 16th-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Indoor Track and Field
National Championships Saturday at the RCA Dome.
Lyngstad, a native of Elverum, Norway, finished third in the mile run to earn
All-American honors for the second time at the championships and the fourth time in her
career. Her time of 4:39.54 was a new school record and was just 47 one-hundredths of
a second behind winner Kate Vermeulen of West Virginia.
Freshman Cecilie Rise closed the indoor season with a school-record performance in the
triple jump. Her mark of 42 feet, 6.25 inches (12.85 meters) placed her 11th at the
Indoor national championships.
Tulane's Distance Medley Relay team of Lyngstad, Lana Garner, Katrina Gemmell and
Alison Lambert earned All-America honors with its third-place finish on Friday. The
quartet posted a school-record time of 11:14.67.
In all, six Tulane athletes earned All-America accolades at the 1999
NCAA Indoor Championships.
As a team, Tulane finished 16th with 12 points. The Green Wave closed the indoor
