BYU, CSU, and Utah off to great starts in conference play.

Oct. 13, 1999

1999 Conference Standings

Conference Action Underway
Mountain West Conference action is well underway as the eight league teams enter the third week of conference play. This week’s conference action has New Mexico at Air Force and No. 8 BYU at Utah in local rivalry matches on Friday. As a result of the light weekend, both Air Force and Utah have an extra day off. Slated to play non-conference matches early next week are New Mexico, who travels to Northern Arizona on Monday, Oct. 18, and No. 8 BYU, who plays host to Notre Dame on Tuesday, Oct. 19. Hitting the road for a full tilt of conference matches will be No. 14 Colorado State and Wyoming. CSU puts its 16-match win streak on the line at San Diego State Friday, then faces UNLV Saturday. Wyoming is in Las Vegas Friday and San Diego Saturday.

1999 Conference Schedule/Results

USA Today/AVCA National Poll
BYU No. 8, CSU No. 14

The first five positions remained the same in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 national poll this week, but there was significant realignment beyond the top-five.

Brigham Young University (12-2/4-0 MWC) climbed two places in this week’s listing after posting three wins this past week. The Cougars’ only losses this season have been to then-No. 7 Stanford on Sept. 25 and in the season opener to Michigan. BYU owns wins over Top 25 members Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.

Colorado State University (16-0/3-0 MWC) remained one of only three undefeated teams in the nation and gained one position (No. 14) in this week’s national poll. Thus far, the Rams have registered three tournament titles and wins over Top 25 teams Colorado and Loyola Marymount.

1999 AVCA National Rankings

BYU’s Puikkonen Named MWC Volleyball Player of the Week
After helping lead the Cougars to three victories during the week, sophomore middle blocker Nina Puikkonen from Brigham Young University has been named the Mountain West Conference Volleyball Player of the Week. Ranked No. 10 in the nation, BYU improved to 12-2 overall and 4-0 in conference action with a 3-1 victory at Weber State and a pair of 3-0 home sweeps in league play over UNLV and San Diego State.

A dominating force at the net during the three matches, Puikkonen put away 17 blocks and 41 kills for averages of 1.70 blocks and 4.10 kills per game. She hit .447 (41-7-76) for the week, collected 21 digs and served two aces.

In the non-conference match at Weber State on Tuesday, Puikkonen drilled 15 kills, assisted on five blocks and collected eight digs. Against UNLV on Friday, she led the Cougars with nine kills and committed just one error in 20 attempts for a .400 attack percentage. She also registered eight blocks in the sweep. In the final action of the week against SDSU on Saturday, Puikkonen again led her team with 17 kills with just two errors in 22 attempts for a near-personal-best .682 attack percentage. She added four more blocks.

A native of Murray, Utah, Puikkonen earned WAC Mountain Division Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference honors this past season after leading the nation in blocking with a 2.17 per game average. She currently leads the team and Mountain West Conference in blocking with 79 total and a 1.65 average. She also leads the league and team in kills with 202 total and a 4.21 per game average and her .362 attack percentage ranks third in the conference.

This is the first conference player of the week honor for Puikkonen in her career and is the second selection for BYU this season.

MWC Preseason Coaches’ Predictions
The coaches from the eight Mountain West Conference institutions registered their votes for projected order of finish in the new conference prior to the season. BYU, which has won the conference title in its first year with each of its previous three conferences, is favored to claim the inaugural MWC crown. The league competition should be exciting as the voting was very close the rest of the way. Colorado State was chosen to be the runner-up, Utah was picked to finish third and UNLV completes the upper half at fourth. Here is the complete preseason poll:

1. BYU
2. Colorado State
3. Utah
4. UNLV
5. Wyoming
6. New Mexico
7. San Diego State
8. Air Force

Four MWC Teams Were Mentioned In Preseason National Poll
Four women’s volleyball teams from the Mountain West Conference received mention in the USA Today/AVCA preseason national poll. Two were listed among the nation’s top-25 and two others received votes.

Brigham Young University enters the season ranked No. 7 in the nation. The Cougars finished 1998 listed No. 6 in the final poll with a 31-4 record. Colorado State climbed into the preseason poll at No. 24. The Rams posted a 24-8 record in 1998 but were not ranked at the end of the season.

Utah received 24 votes to place just outside of the top-25. The Utes owned a 21-10 record in 1998. UNLV brings the conference total to four teams mentioned in the preseason poll by gaining one vote. The Rebels went 23-8 this past season.

Rich Postseason History
Six of the eight MWC women’s volleyball programs have competed in postseason action over the years while the other two programs have only been in competition since 1996. Leading the charge is Brigham Young University, which has competed in the NCAA tournament 17 times. Highlighting BYU’s NCAA success is a national runner-up finish in 1993. The Cougars have also reached the Regional Final seven times - including the past three years.

Colorado State has competed in the last four NCAA tournaments bringing its total to 10. San Diego State has made 12 NCAA appearances, New Mexico seven, Wyoming four and Utah one. In addition, CSU and Utah have each competed in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).

Starting Fresh With History On Its Side
Although 1999 is the first season of competition for the Mountain West Conference, the histories of its women’s volleyball programs gives this new league a solid national reputation on which to build an exciting future. Prior to forming the MWC, all eight institutions competed in the 16-team Western Athletic Conference where they enjoyed considerable national recognition in the sport of women’s volleyball.
