San Diego State enters polls at number 24.

Oct. 6, 1999

Player of The Week: BYU senior forward Maren Hendershot has been selected as the Mountain West Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. Hendershot has started all 10 matches this season for the Cougars and leads the team with six goals and five assists for a total of 17 points. This past week, BYU improved its overall record to 9-1 as it defeated Washington 3-0 and Pacific 2-0 in Provo, Utah.

Hendershot, of Colorado Springs, Colo. (Doherty High School), scored two goals on five shots in two matches over the weekend. Against Washington, her goal came at the 28:53 mark of the first half and gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead. In the Pacific match, Hendershot netted her fifth goal of the season on a break away in the 15th minute, and secured the 2-0 BYU victory.

This is the first player of the week honor for Hendershot this season and the second for BYU.

Mountain West Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week: Sept. 7 – Natalyn Lewis, BYU, Sept. 13 – Kate Qually, San Diego State, Sept. 20 Amy Kofoed, Utah, Sept. 27 – Maren Hendershot, BYU.

National Rankings: BYU dropped two spots in the latest NSCAA Coaches’ Poll from No. 10 to No. 12 after going 2-0 and improving its record to 9-1. The Cougars received 162 votes this week. In the Soccer America poll, BYU moved up two positions to No. 9. Last week the Cougars were No. 11. The Soccer Buzz poll also had BYU jumping up one spot from No. 11 to No. 10 this week.

San Diego State reentered the Soccer Buzz poll this week at No. 24. Last week the Aztecs dropped out of the poll after being ranked at No. 25 the week of Sept. 14.

Regional Rankings: BYU and San Diego State both appear in the Soccer Buzz West Regional Rankings this week. The Cougars, who were No. 2 last week, fell to No. 4, while the Aztecs dropped from No. 6 to No. 7.

National Statistics: BYU dropped one spot in the latest national rankings in scoring offense from No. 4 to No. 5. The Cougars have scored 36 goals for a 3.60 goals per game average. The 36 goals in 10 matches is tied for the fifth highest goal total in the country through Sept. 26.

Individually speaking, Wyoming junior goalkeeper Amanda Vandervort moved from No. 7 to a tie for the No. 9 spot in the country in saves per game, averaging 9.22. In nine matches, Vandervort has made 83 total saves.

Keeping Things Going: The Air Force Academy has put together two solid weeks of play after starting the season 0-4. After recording its first two shutouts of the season in conjunction with winning its first two matches of the year a week ago, AFA returned to action on Sept. 22 at Colorado. The Falcons kept the match close, but fell 2-0 after the Buffaloes scored on a penalty kick in the 66th minute to secure the match. Air Force rebounded over the weekend and won its two matches over Idaho State (3-2) and Oral Roberts (3-2). The Falcons have now won four of their last five matches and will return to action this weekend at the Armed Services Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri.

Cowgirls Notch First Wins: Wyoming registered it first two wins of the season this past weekend with victories over Oral Roberts (1-0) and Idaho State (3-2). The 1-0 win over Idaho State was the Cowgirls first shutout of the season. Freshman forward Marci Crank was the hero as she netted the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute of the match. The three goals scored by Wyoming in the 3-2 victory over Idaho State marked the highest goal total of the season. The last time the Cowgirls scored three or more goals was on Oct. 16, 1998 in a 4-1 win at home against TCU, a span of 13 matches. Junior midfielder Anne Maddock clinched the win over Idaho State when she beat goalie Chrissey Nelson one on one in the 52nd minute of the match to give Wyoming a 3-1 lead. The Bengals scored late in the match to pull within one goal, but the Cowgirls held on for the 3-2 win.

Zollinger Saves Day: Utah sophomore forward Lesa Zollinger saved the day and helped the Utes pull out a 1-0 double overtime victory over Washington last Sunday. In the second half of the scoreless match, Ute goalkeeper Courtney Hills was lured from the box, which gave the Huskies an easy open net shot. Zollinger saved the match as she dove and deflected a Washington shot that helped Utah force overtime and eventually win the match.

Overtime is a Good Time: Mountain West Conference teams have been involved in 12 overtime matches this season. Of those 12 matches, MWC teams have won 10. Utah leads the league in overtime matches with three, including two that went into double overtime, and has won on all three occasions. Wyoming is the lone team in the conference that has yet to play an overtime match.

Home Sweet Home: Mountain West Conference teams have compiled a 20-7-1 home record thus far in the 1999 season. BYU and UNLV are enjoying the confines of their own backyard, as each team is undefeated at home. The Cougars are 5-0 in Provo, while the Rebels are 4-0 in Las Vegas. The last time BYU lost at home was on Nov. 7, 1998 to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. UNLV is 9-1-1 all time at home since the inception of the program last year. Its lone defeat came on Oct. 2, 1998 at the feet of Sacramento State (2-1).

Controlling the Ball: BYU has clearly controlled the ball in all 10 of its matches this season. The Cougars are the only team in the conference that has outshot its opponent in every contest this season. BYU owns an amazing 234-59 shot advantage over their opponents. The Cougars’ closest match in terms of shots came in the lone loss of the season to USC. The Cougars outshot the Lady Trojans 13-12. In eight of nine other matches, BYU has outshot its opponent by at least 10 shots. Its highest shot output of the season came in a 3-1 win over Arizona as the Cougars tallied 39 shots to the Wildcats three.

One Assist To Go: San Diego State senior forward Lori LaCoursiere had one assist in the Aztecs 2-1 upset of No. 19 Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles last Friday. Her 34 career assists is one shy of the all-time SDSU record of 35 set by All-American Catherine McGuire (1995-98). McGuire will be on hand when LaCoursiere breaks the record, as she is the Aztecs’ graduate assistant coach this season.

Defense of the Week: The BYU defense, headed by sophomore goalie Jennifer Waldron, shutout both of its opponents this past weekend. The Cougars downed Washington 3-0 on Friday and then took care of Pacific 2-0 on Saturday. In the two matches, BYU outshot its opponents 35-9, while Waldron made six saves. It was the third shutout of the year registered by the Cougars.

Offense of the Week: UNLV went 3-0 last week with victories over Cal State Fullerton (3-2), Long Beach State (3-1) and Cal State Northridge (2-1 in 2 ot). The Rebel offense managed eight goals on 41 shots and scored three goals in a match for the fifth time this season. In 1998, the Rebels netted three goals in just one match. Sophomore forward Janae Sims leads the team with three goals and one assist over the three matches. In the victory over Long Beach State, Sims notched two goals and one assist. She currently leads UNLV with five goals and 11 total points on the season.

Conference Scoring: Mountain West Conference teams have extended their scoring advantage over their opponents from 18 to 25 goals this week. League teams have 123 goals to the opponents 98.

BYU leads the way in scoring for the forth week in a row with a 3.6 goals per match average. San Diego State remains second with a 2.22 average followed by Utah (1.89), New Mexico (1.60), UNLV (1.56), Air Force (1.1) and Wyoming (0.89).

MWC vs. Nonconference Opponents: Mountain West Conference teams have a combined 35-27-3 (.562) record against nonconference opponents in 1999. The .562 win percentage is the highest of the year against nonconference opponents.

Crowded House: BYU was 89 fans shy of the Mountain West Conference women’s soccer attendance record of 2,168 set by New Mexico on Sept. 17, 1999 vs. Fairfield. The 2,079 fans marked the second time this season that BYU has drawn over 1,000 fans. On Sept. 11, the Cougars drew 1,616 patrons in a match vs. Cal Poly SLO.

San Diego State Registers First MWC Win: On the first official day of competition as a member of the Mountain West Conference, the San Diego State women’s soccer team captured the first victory by any team in any sport for the conference. The Aztces played UCSB in the first-ever sporting event in the Mountain West Conference on August 27, 1999 and won in style with a 5-1 win over the Gauchos.

MWC Schedule Opens Oct. 6: The first Mountain West Conference women’s soccer match will feature Utah hosting New Mexico on Wednesday, October 6 at 4 p.m. (MT).
