BAYLOR
Thursday, March 7, 2002 / Municipal Auditorium / Kansas City, Mo.
Head Coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson
On the game and Iowa State:
"I thought it was a hard fought game, and it was a great television game for our conference. Bill Fennelly is a great coach, and his kids played so hard. They have a program now and we would like to be there someday."
On the win:
"This was a big win for us and another first for our program. I think it's only fitting that the two teams that finished first and second in the league get to fight it out for the championship."
On her coaching:
"I coach with emotion. I'm young and I have a lot of energy. I'm going to work those sidelines because that's the way I played the game and that's the way I know how to coach the game. I'll never stand there with my hands folded."
On playing
Stasha Richards:
"Stasha is just a mystery to me how sometimes she can go out there and do that against that quality of an opponent and then some games she wants to make me pull my hair out. It's a feel for your kids and a feel for the game. Sometimes you make the right decisions and sometimes you don't."
Stasha Richards, Junior Forward
On her shooting performance:
"I've been through both the good and the bad. I got some good looks and luckily they went in tonight."
Sheila Lambert, Senior Guard
On coming in after sitting b/c of foul trouble:
"You come out in the second half determined. You've got that fire and sometimes you just need to calm down and let the game come to you."
On being behind to Iowa State:
"First of all, Iowa State is a great team. Being down by four is not that big to our team. We have been down by more than that. Coach taught us to just keep plugging away and that's what we did."
Danielle Crockrom, Senior Forward
On sitting on the bench with foul trouble:
"It kills you knowing you are in foul trouble. Our bench did an incredible job while we (the starters) were out."
On the importance of the perimeter making their shots:
"It helps tremendously (when the perimeter hits shots). It gives the post players a chance to get open looks."
On her teams' success:
"I'm tired of going home. We have come so far in such a short time. We have so much heart and I am really proud of this team."
IOWA STATE
Thursday, March 7, 2002 / Municipal Auditorium / Kansas City, Mo.
Head Coach Bill Fennelly
Opening:
"Baylor was a tough team to handle tonight, I give them a lot of credit. Thanks to the Big 12 and Kansas City for hosting such a fine event, its an honor to be a part of it. I'm very proud of our kids. I feel that even though we lost, we still gained a lot. Baylor just played better than we did tonight."
About the matchup:
"Baylor is such a tough ballclub. They have great role players who stepped up tonight. In a tournament like this, usually the big players cancel each other out so others have to step up and Baylor did that. Their team speed was our number one concern, as it plays such a role in the transition game and converting turnovers."
About fatigue:
"I don't think we were tired tonight, even with this being our third game in three nights. We played hard."
About Baylor's spurt in the second half:
"To start the half they scored a three-point play, then we had a turnover, then they scored again. They made plays right away to take the lead in the second half and we had to play catch-up. It seemed like we always had to make one more play - great teams like Baylor don't let you make that play."
Angie Welle, Sr. Center
On fatigue from tournament:
"You forget about the previous games. I think the big thing was our turnovers, that is what hurt us tonight."
On having the lead in the 2nd half:
"Sheila and Danielle were gone for the first half, and we took advantage of that. They were back in the game during the 2nd half and we knew that they would make big plays. They set the tone for their team."
Lindsey Wilson, Junior Guard
On the match-up:
"Baylor's quickness on the ball is some of the best defense we have seen all year. Last time we took better care of the ball."
