Men's Tennis Wins Quarterfinal Match

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The 6th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team continued their winning ways on Saturday when they defeated Oklahoma, 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament in College Station. The Bears raised their season record to 23-1 while eighth-seeded Oklahoma dropped to 10-12. The Matt Knoll coached Bears took the doubles point when Matias Marin and Reiner Neurohr defeated Tobias Kronlein and Chris Mitchell at the No. 2 position, 8-4 and Mike Garcia and Markus Hornung won 8-3 over Matt Long and Matt Lopez at No. 3.
Needing three singles victories to secure the match, the Bears made quick work of the Sooners. At No. 1 singles, seventh-ranked Benjamin Becker breezed to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kronlein. Next, Neurohr, at No. 5 singles, beat Matt Long, 6-1, 7-5. Matias Marin secured the match for the Bears when he defeated Alex Nomicos 6-0, 7-6(4).
In Big 12 tournament play, once a team has four points, all remaining matches are halted immediately. Therefore, play was not completed at No. 1 doubles and Nos. 2, 3 and 6 doubles. "In postseason the name of the game is survive and advance," said Knoll. "We'll take the win and get ready for tomorrow's opponent." The Bears move on to the semifinals and will face Texas Tech, the tournament's No. 9 seed, at noon on Saturday (27th). Texas Tech defeated Oklahoma State, 4-0, to advance to the semifinals.
