Sept. 13, 2001

WACO, Texas - The Big 12 Conference has postponed competition in all sports through Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001.

For Baylor, this means football (Saturday at Minnesota), volleyball (Saturday vs. Kansas), and soccer (Friday and Sunday at Lady'Back Invitational) have all been canceled or postponed. Baylor's cross country meet at Rice, scheduled for Saturday, was canceled early Thursday, as was the New Mexico Comcast Dick McGuire Invitational, where the Baylor women's golf team was to participate.

This is a result of unanimous action taken by the conference's presidents and chancellors, faculty representatives, directors of athletics, and senior women administrators.

Notwithstanding the strong sentiment of the institutions to return to normal activities as soon as possible, the practical and logistical issues associated with travel to campus athletics events and other management concerns ultimately could not be overcome.

"This has been an unprecedented period for our country," said Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg, "and these decisions were very challenging for all of us. We know that sports events are secondary to the many important developments of the last few days, but we do have a commitment to return to full activity as soon as possible."

The conference will work to reschedule the postponed events and will look at options in the upcoming days. The Big 12 also will evaluate next week's competition in light of national developments but will plan to return to competition next week.
