Globetrotters Run Past College All-Stars 88-72(SAN ANTONIO, April 2, 2004) – Leading from start to finish, the Harlem Globetrotters posted their fourth victory in the past five years over the nation’s top college seniors, 88-72 in the 2004 NABC College All-Star Game. An annual part of Final Four Weekend, the Globetrotters were paced by veteran forward Alex “Big Ticket” Sanders’ team-high 19 points. Sanders and Temple guard David Hawkins were named Most Valuable Players of the game. “The Globetrotters were allowed to set the tone early tonight with our trapping defense and by controlling the boards in the first half,” said Globetrotters Owner and Chairman Mannie Jackson. “We had a ‘showtime’ team effort at both ends of the court and kept the college players on their heels all night.” Held at San Antonio’s SBC Center, the Globetrotters led 46-34 at the intermission by shooting a blistering .594-percent from the field (19-of-32). Sanders, in his fourth season with the Globetrotters, and point guard Brandon Dean tallied 11 and 10 points respectively in the first half. Overall, the Globetrotters shot .530-percent from the floor (35-of-66), including eight-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc (.615-percent). Dean finished with 13 points, while Antwan Scott and Roderick Brown each added 11 for the winners. The College All-Stars, coached by Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, were led by Tony Bobbitt’s (Cincinnati) game-high 22 points and Hawkins’ 14 points. Globetrotter forward Anthony “Pig” Miller grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds. The inaugural NABC College All-Star Game was played in Indianapolis in 2000, with the Globetrotters defeating the college seniors, 82-80. Overall, the Globetrotters have won four of the five match-ups against the NABC College All-Stars, including last year’s thrilling 87-85 overtime victory in New Orleans. The Globetrotters will complete their 2004 North American tour in mid-April before embarking on an eight week tour of Europe. In the midst of their 78th consecutive year of touring the world, the Globetrotters are enjoying one of their most successful seasons ever at the turnstiles. Inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002, the Globetrotters have played in 117 countries before 120 million fans over the past eight decades. |
