WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army's Office of Media Relations retained its place among the nation's most highly decorated sports information offices when it walked off with 10 publication awards, including five national citings, at last week's College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) workshop in Rochester, N.Y.
Army's football periodicals led the way, with the Black Knights' game programs and media guides garnering five awards. Army's football media guide captured top district honors for the fifth time in seven years en route to a "Fifth Best in the Nation" citing. It marked the second top five national finish for the media guide in the last three years. Only Notre Dame, Texas, Tennessee and Nebraska saw their respective media guides rank ahead of the Black Knights' book. The Army media guide finished "Third Best in the Nation" two years ago.
The Black Knights' game day program also continued its run of recent excellence, finishing fourth nationally. Over the past decade, the publication has placed first (1992) or second (1995, 1996) on several occasions and garnered four top-five finishes. Meanwhile, the Army-Navy game program was a double-winner on the national stage. Voted "Best in the Nation" in the "special publications" contest, the Army-Navy game program also snared "Best Cover in the Nation" plaudits in the category.
In addition to the football citings, Army's lacrosse media guide earned "Third Best in the Nation" honors, the third top three national finish for the book in the past four years. The Black Knights' lacrosse media guide was voted "Best in the Nation" in both 1999 and 2000.
Army was well represented on the district level as well with the Cadets' softball, baseball and women's soccer media guides claiming district awards. While softball gained top honors in District I, baseball placed second and women's soccer finished third.
Army's Office of Media Relations has piled up 37 publication awards from CoSIDA in the past seven years. West Point staffers have also claimed 47 writing awards sponsored by CoSIDA. Results from this year's writing contest have not yet been announced.
