WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - Army wide receiver Anthony Miller, who made three starts for the Black Knights, died after a heart attack.
Miller, a 20-year-old from Temple Hills, Md., was hospitalized Thursday after complaining of nausea and dizziness and died Friday shortly after the heart attack.
An immune deficiency left him vulnerable to a virus that attacked his system and enlarged his heart, according to his mother, Veronica. Miller had prolonged bouts with pneumonia and strep throat that sidelined him for many of the 2001 spring practices.
An autopsy was to be performed.
"We are devastated by the loss of Anthony," coach Todd Berry said. "His spirit epitomized the ideals of West Point and the Army football team."
As wide receiver, Miller caught 27 passes for 358 yards. He was better known for his all-out effort on special teams, making 24 tackles and forcing two fumbles.
"It's a tragic loss. You take away everything around football, and he is everything that is good and what's right about West Point and this country," assistant athletic director Bob Beretta said.
West Point memorial services were scheduled for Monday at midnight and Tuesday afternoon. Burial plans were incomplete.
