Reno, Nev. - University of Nevada Head Coach Gary Powers has announced the signing of seven new recruits to play for the Wolf Pack baseball squad next season. Junior College transfers Scott Gilbertson, Brandon Gottier, and Brian Gazerro join freshmen Baker Krukow, Ryan Harbaugh, Brandon Evans, and Travis Sutton as the new signees. The seven newcomers along with Brett Hayes, Robert Marcial, and Ben Mummy, who signed during the early signing period, giving the Pack 10 newcomers for the 2003 season at this time.
Gilbertson transfers to Nevada after two years at Cosumnes River Community College in Sacramento, Calif. The 6'5", left-hander earned All-Northern California and All-Bay Valley Conference honors this past season. As a sophomore he posted a 10-3 mark with a school single season record ERA of 1.54. He struckout 68 in 93.2 innings pitched as a sophomore and 21 in 39.2 innings pitched his freshman season. Combining his 2-1 record as a freshman with his 10-3 mark as a sophomore gave him a two-year record of 12-4. In addition to setting the single season ERA record as a sophomore he established two additional school career marks in ERA(2.03) and appearances(37) in his two seasons at CRCC.
A product of Yakima, Wash., Gottier played two seasons at Yakima Valley Community College where he established a school record with 190 career strikeouts. The 6'2", right-hander posted a 11-3 record this past season, striking out 112 in 91 innings. He earned Eastern Division First-Team and All-Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges First-Team honors as a sophomore.
A center fielder, Gazerro hit .350 last season at L.A. Harbor College. He was recruited to play for the Seahawks by current Wolf Pack assistant Jay Uhlman who was the head coach at LAHC his freshman season.
Krukow, a catcher is the son of former Major League Baseball player and current San Francisco Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow. He batted .371 as a senior at San Luis Obispo High School in San Luis Obispo, Calif. this past year. A two-time Area Code Participant and three-year All-Northern League selection he has been selected to play in the Goodwill Games in Cuba.
A right-handed pitcher, Harbaugh posted an 8-3 record with a 1.31 ERA in 77 inning pitched as senior this past season at Alhambra High School in Martinez, Calif. He recorded 80 strikeouts and earned All-Diablo Foothill Athletic League First-Team honors as a prep senior.
Evans is a local product who played his prep baseball at Reno's Galena High School where he pitched for the Grizzlies. This past season he posted a 7-3 record in 55 innings pitched with a 2.53 ERA. He struckout 64 while walking just nine his senior season.
Sutton posted a 14-0 record in helping Camarillo High School win the California Division I State Championship. In the state title contest he pitched a complete game. He earned All-Pacific View League and All-County First-Team honors as a prep senior and was also named league and county Pitcher-of-the-Year.
