FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU first baseman Walter Olmstead (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur), who led the 2002 Horned Frogs with 12 home runs and 54 RBI, was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Tuesday afternoon. Olmstead was the third pick of the sixth round and the 165th selection overall.
Olmstead's 12 homers and 54 RBI not only led TCU, but ranked among the top ten in Conference USA, landing the switch-hitter on the all-C-USA second team. He has also led the Horned Frogs in round-trippers each of the last two seasons.
The first baseman's 520 and 511 putouts at first base in 2001 and 2002, respectively, rank one-two in the school's all-time single-season record book. Additionally, his 1,218 career putouts rank second all-time on the TCU career list, just 66 behind David Wallace's 1,284 putouts from 1996-99.
The selection marks the seventh-straight year and 15th time in TCU Head Coach Lance Brown's 16-year tenure at TCU that at least one Horned Frog has been taken in the MLB draft. In all, TCU has had 34 players drafted in that span.
Twenty-two of the draft's 50 rounds took place on Tuesday. The draft will conclude Wednesday afternoon.
