The Corte Report

McGuffey
Visit www.uncbears.com for more news about Corte McGuffey and Northern Colorado.
Bears QB Corte (pronounced "court") McGuffey, a candidate for the Harlon Hill Award, given each season to the nation's top Division II football player, catches up on the last couple of weeks and offers some insight into the rest of the season.

October 6, 1999 - Week 6

Dear Bear Fans,

Sorry for the missed entry last week. The days slipped by before I had an opportunity to write, so I'll try to make up for it this week.

Our home opener vs. SDSU couldn't have gone better, as we defeated the Jacks by the score of 45-18. The offense was rolling outside of a couple missed assignments and a fumble in the third quarter. I played my best game of the season going 17 of 21 for around 270 yards and 3 TD's. Things felt really good out there. The offensive line is doing a marvelous job, as I felt little to no pressure all day. Hats off to Ryan, Ryan, John, Carlos, and Garret!

This last week we travelled to Mankato, MN, to take on the Mavericks of Minnesota State. I would be lying if I said we weren't lucky to come out of there with a win. I haven't played that bad since my sophomore year. Its amazing how fast things can change. One week I'm 17 of 21, and the next I'm throwing the worst interception of my life. It's embarrassing. It wasn't lack of preparation or focus, and I know we weren't overlooking Mankato. I don't know what it was, but I've promised myself to never have a performance like that again. The conditions weren't optimal, but that's no excuse. However, the bottom line is we got the victory and we are 5-0.

Enough about last week, lets talk UNO! This is the biggest game in Division II this year. The Mavs are bringing a solid team to Greeley this weekend. They are undefeated as well, and have probably the best rushing attack at our level. Defensively, UNO plays an in your face eight man front, with man coverage on the outside. I love the challenge that UNO presents! They basically say "Hey we don't think you can beat us one on one" If we want to win on Saturday, we have to make some big plays and control the ball to keep the Mavs rushing attack off the field. I can't wait to play this game, just talking about it gets me pumped up.

Yours in football,
Corte McGuffey

P.S. - A special thanks to Steve Lee and Lonnie (Bama Boys), for making the trip up to Mankato. You guys are the best. I just wish I could have put on a better performance for you. Big game this week. Steve I'll talk to you later. Thanks again.
